The numbers from the city
| Item | 2025 report |
|---|---|
| Disinfectant | Chloramines |
| Level detected | 3.74 ppm |
| Range of results | 0.6 to 5.0 ppm |
| Maximum residual disinfectant level | 4.0 ppm |
The chloramine is added after the lime softening and reverse osmosis waters are blended, so every Lake Worth Beach customer gets it, including the outside-city areas and consecutive systems the city serves.
The temporary switch to free chlorine
The city published a notice that from August 24 through September 14, 2025, it would use a free chlorine residual instead of its usual combined chlorine (chloramines), calling it standard industry practice to maintain the distribution system. During that time, it increased hydrant flushing. The notice told customers they might notice a slight chlorine taste or odor.
The same notice reminded people who use home dialysis equipment or keep fish that removing free chlorine and removing chloramine are different, and to consult the appropriate professionals. Pet stores sell aquarium products made for each.
Why plain carbon may struggle
Chloramine is more stable than free chlorine. That is why utilities use it: it lasts longer in the pipes. The same stability means a basic carbon pitcher or a small carbon cartridge may not have enough contact time to deal with it well. Systems built for chloramine use media designed for it, such as catalytic carbon, and are sized for your flow. See choosing a filter for chloramine.
Certification to look for
- NSF/ANSI 42 covers chlorine and, in a separate claim, chloramine reduction for taste and odor. Check that chloramine is specifically listed.
- Match the exact model number on the certifier's listing.
- Ask for the rated capacity, since performance only applies within it.
Living Water's Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring whole-home systems are described by Living Water as removing chloramine and chlorine. Ask Jorge for the specifications of the model he recommends.
Whole-home or kitchen only
If the smell in the shower bothers you, treat the whole home with a whole-home system. If you only care about drinking water, an under-sink RO with carbon stages covers the kitchen tap. Many households start with one and add the other later.
Measure it at your tap
Jorge measures total chlorine at your kitchen tap and explains how it compares with the city's numbers. Call, text or WhatsApp Jorge at (305) 793-5974.
