The facts, source by source
| Source | Fluoride status |
|---|---|
| North Miami system (Winson plant) | 0.17 ppm in the 2025 report |
| Miami-Dade water the city buys | Not added since June 6, 2025; WASD reports natural levels of 0.1 to 0.3 ppm since then |
| State law | Florida Statutes section 403.859 prohibits non-approved additives in public water systems, effective July 1, 2025 |
Reading the report
The report's fluoride line lists the source as erosion of natural deposits and a water additive, and a footnote uses standard language about plants where fluoride is added. Because reports summarize a full year and change slowly in format, read the number itself and ask Public Works at 305-895-9830 if you want to know the current practice at the Winson plant.
How home systems handle fluoride
- Reverse osmosis: the membrane rejects most dissolved minerals, fluoride among them.
- Activated alumina: a specialty medium; performance depends on contact time and pH.
- Ordinary carbon: most pitchers, fridge filters and whole-home carbon systems are not designed for fluoride.
Check that the exact model is certified for fluoride reduction, typically under NSF/ANSI 58 for RO.
Alkaline RO in a North Miami kitchen
Living Water's under-sink alkaline RO is a multi-stage system with a dedicated faucet and a final stage that adds minerals back. It fits houses and condos. Ask Jorge for the specific model's certification listing to confirm its reduction claims. Compare in alkaline vs. standard RO.
Why the kitchen, not the whole house
Fluoride questions center on drinking and cooking water, so RO at the kitchen tap is the targeted approach. A whole-home carbon system is built for chloramine, taste and odor. Many households pair a whole-home filter for chloramine with RO for drinking.
Questions to ask about any fluoride filter
- Is this exact model certified for fluoride reduction, and under which standard?
- How long is the membrane or medium rated to last at my household's use?
- Does the system add minerals back, and does that affect the reduction claim?
- Where does the faucet go, and does it need a countertop hole?
Health questions
This page does not argue for or against fluoride. For questions about fluoride and your family's teeth or health, talk with your dentist or doctor. For equipment, call, text or WhatsApp Jorge at (305) 793-5974.
