What PFAS are
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances have been used in non-stick cookware, water-resistant clothing, cosmetics, food packaging and firefighting foam. They break down very slowly, which is why they are called forever chemicals. The EPA has set drinking water standards for several PFAS, with compliance deadlines for utilities.
There are thousands of PFAS compounds; testing and certification focus on a handful, mainly PFOA and PFOS.
Seacoast's PFAS statement
Seacoast's PFAS information sheet says its eastern service area, homes and businesses east of the Beeline Highway and north of Silver Beach Road in Lake Park, receives water processed at its Hood Road facility in Palm Beach Gardens, and that sampling confirmed no detectable PFAS. It says no further monitoring is required until 2027. North Palm Beach is in that eastern area. Seacoast also says its reverse osmosis and nanofiltration processes remove these contaminants.
Seacoast's western service area is different: about 1,500 properties in western communities receive water treated by Palm Beach County Water Utilities. That does not apply to North Palm Beach.
Choosing a PFAS filter anyway
- Look for NSF/ANSI 53 (carbon) or NSF/ANSI 58 (RO) certification with a PFOA and PFOS claim.
- Check the exact model number on the certifier's listing.
- Change filters on schedule; an overdue filter may not perform as certified.
Living Water does not make PFAS claims for its systems. Jorge can explain what a certification listing shows.
A whole-home carbon system sized for chloramine is not the same as a drinking water filter certified for PFAS. If PFAS is your goal, it is usually a kitchen-tap decision.
Private wells
A private well is not covered by Seacoast's monitoring. PFAS testing requires a certified laboratory using EPA methods; an in-home screening cannot measure them. See home screening vs. lab analysis.
Ask any seller to show you the listing, not just the box.
Reading results
PFAS results are reported in nanograms per liter, the same as parts per trillion. Compare each compound with its EPA standard, note the sample date and whether the sample came from the plant or a tap.
Ask the lab which PFAS compounds its method covers and its reporting limits.
