Compare the options
| Option | Strengths | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Delivered bottled water | No installation | Deliveries, storage, bottles |
| Pitcher | Simple | Small; many not rated for chloramine |
| Fridge filter | Convenient | Check chloramine claim |
| Under-sink alkaline RO | Dedicated faucet; carbon plus membrane | Needs space and a drain |
| Whole-home | Every tap and shower | Does not lower dissolved solids |
Delivered bottled water is common on the island and perfectly reasonable. The trade-offs are practical: deliveries, storage space, empty bottles and the cost over a year. Pitchers and fridge filters are easy to try, but many are labeled for chlorine taste and odor rather than chloramine reduction, which is why some people still notice a taste.
What the island's water brings
- Lake-sourced water, lime-softened, filtered and UV-treated on the mainland.
- Chloramine, highest annual average 3.2 ppm; free chlorine for 21 days each summer.
- Dissolved solids of 243 ppm.
None of that is out of standard. It explains the taste some residents want to change.
Why under-sink alkaline RO
Living Water's multi-stage alkaline RO units have a dedicated faucet and suit homes, offices and apartments. The alkaline stage adds minerals back for taste. See under-sink RO in Palm Beach and the compact alkaline RO.
The membrane lowers dissolved solids; the carbon handles chloramine; the alkaline stage restores some minerals for taste. That combination is the reason it is the usual recommendation here.
Kitchens, bars and entertaining
In homes that entertain, ice and coffee matter as much as a glass of water. Chloramine carries into both. An RO at the kitchen with lines to the ice maker and refrigerator, plus a second unit at a bar if used often, covers most of it.
For staff kitchens or catering pantries that prepare food for events, RO at that sink keeps cooking water consistent with what guests are served at the bar.
Whole-home plus RO
If the shower smell matters as much as the glass, pair a whole-home system with RO. See whole-house vs. under-sink filter.
