By type of home
- Apartment or rental: a pitcher certified for chloramine, or RO with the landlord's permission.
- Manufactured home: a compact or tankless under-sink RO.
- House: RO in the kitchen, plus a whole-home system if showers matter to you.
- Office or shop: RO at the break room sink, sized for the number of people.
How each option handles chloramine
Hollywood disinfects the water with chloramines, reported at 3.1 ppm for District 3BC in 2025. Pitchers and fridge filters vary: some list chloramine, many list only chlorine taste. RO units use carbon stages before the membrane; whole-home systems use media made for chloramine. Check each model's listing.
If you are unsure which is right, under-sink RO is a safe middle ground: it handles chloramine and dissolved solids for drinking water without main-line work.
Volume and convenience
A pitcher works for one or two people who drink modest amounts. Families that cook every day, make coffee and use ice need more, and refilling a pitcher gets old fast. RO supplies water on tap, and a fridge line covers ice.
Offices with several people filling bottles all day may want a higher-output RO or a model with a larger tank.
A simple decision path
- Read the 3BC column of Broward County's report.
- Test your tap.
- Decide what you want treated: drinking water only, or every tap.
- Compare certifications and upkeep. See whole-house vs. under-sink.
Upkeep matters
Ask for every option's replacement schedule in writing. See RO operating costs.
Bottled water as the benchmark
Already buying cases of water? Weigh that ongoing spend with an RO system's purchase and upkeep using the bottled water vs. RO calculator. Fewer bottles also means less to carry and store.
