Is it for you?
- You notice a chemical or pool smell in showers and at every sink, not just the kitchen.
- You own a house with access to the main line.
- You want filtered water for laundry, ice and cooking without separate filters at each tap.
If your only concern is drinking water, an under-sink RO may be all you need.
Why the media must be chloramine-rated
Chloramine is chlorine combined with ammonia. It is more stable than free chlorine, which is why Hollywood uses it to keep water disinfected across a large distribution system, and why ordinary carbon removes it slowly. A whole-home system for 3BC water needs catalytic carbon or media designed for chloramine, and enough of it for your household's peak flow. Living Water describes its Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring systems as removing chloramine and chlorine; see the city water system.
Sizing factors
- Peak flow: how many showers, sinks and appliances run at once.
- Chloramine level at your tap, which Jorge measures.
- Main line size and the space where it enters.
- Access for a bypass valve and future media changes.
Placement also matters for service. Media is replaced on a schedule, so the system should sit where a technician can reach the bypass and the tank without moving landscaping or equipment.
If you live in a manufactured home
If you live in a manufactured home, the water connection usually runs beneath the home. A whole-home system can sometimes be installed at the meter side of the connection, depending on space, protection from weather and any park rules. If not, under-sink RO covers drinking water. Jorge looks at your specific setup before suggesting either.
Pairing with RO
Whole-home filtration and kitchen RO do different jobs. Read whole-house filtration vs. reverse osmosis to see which order makes sense for you.
What changes after installation
Most people notice the smell first: showers and sinks no longer carry the pool-like odor. Ice and coffee may taste different. Water pressure should stay normal if the system is sized right. Hardness will not change, because a chloramine filter does not soften, and on District 3BC water it rarely needs to. Jorge can measure chloramine before and after so you can see the change in numbers, not just in taste.
