Property type changes everything
| Property | Usual system | Main cost factors |
|---|---|---|
| House | Whole-home plus kitchen RO | Flow, main line, location |
| Manufactured home | Under-sink RO; whole-home if feasible | Connection access, protection |
| Apartment | Under-sink RO | Model, options, landlord rules |
| Business | RO for drinking; softening if equipment needs it | Daily volume, equipment |
Other things that move the price
- Chloramine level: 3.1 ppm for District 3BC in 2025; more media is needed for high flow at that level.
- Plumbing: valves, fittings and drain access.
- Options: alkaline stage, tankless RO, fridge line.
What you can usually skip
A softener, on county water, unless a test shows hardness that justifies it. Ask any quote that includes one for the measured number.
Likewise, a quote that adds multiple stages for contaminants your report and test do not show is worth questioning. More equipment is not automatically better water.
Reading an itemized quote
- Equipment: exact model numbers and certifications.
- Installation: labor, parts, any permits.
- Consumables: filters and media, with schedule.
- Warranty: in writing.

Ownership over time
The purchase is one part. Replacement media and filters add up over years, and higher chloramine and heavier use shorten carbon life. Ask for the expected replacement schedule for your household. See annual ownership costs.
Why two neighbors get different quotes
Two homes on the same street can have different main line sizes, different cabinet layouts, different household sizes and different goals. One wants every shower treated; the other only wants better coffee. The water may be identical, but the right system is not. Compare quotes for the same scope, not just the same address.
Businesses
For a shop, office or restaurant, the quote depends on daily use, the number of people drinking the water and which equipment needs protecting. Jorge lists exactly which taps and machines a system serves so you can compare like with like.
