Why testing comes first here
The city's 2025 Water Quality Report says its Biscayne Aquifer water is softened and filtered before disinfection. A softener on top of that is only worth paying for when your tap still shows meaningful hardness, when you use a well, or when equipment needs extra protection.
The city's report also lists sodium at 16.4 parts per million in its treated water. Ion-exchange softening adds some sodium, which is one more reason to soften only when your test shows a real need.
Price drivers
- Measured hardness sets the capacity needed.
- Water use: people, bathrooms and appliances, or daily gallons for a business.
- Regeneration control: demand-initiated (metered) systems regenerate only when needed and usually use less salt and water than timed ones.
- Install: location, drain access, bypass valve, any plumbing updates.
- Combination units: adding a carbon stage for chloramine.
Install location matters too. Many Pembroke Pines homes have the main line entering near the garage or side yard. A softener needs a level base, a drain for regeneration water and protection from sun and sprinkler spray, and HOA rules may apply to exterior equipment.
Running costs
| Item | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Salt | How much per month for my household? |
| Water | How much is used per regeneration? |
| Resin | Expected life and replacement? |
| Service | What is covered, and how often? |
Questions for any softener quote
- What hardness number was measured at my tap, and how was capacity sized from it?
- How often will it regenerate, and how much salt will I add each month?
- Where will the drain line run, and is a bypass valve included?
- What does the warranty cover on the tank, resin and control valve?
- Is a carbon stage for chloramine included, or is that a separate system?
If the measured hardness at a Pembroke Pines city-water tap is low, ask the installer why a softener is still being recommended.
For businesses
Restaurants, gyms, laundries and car washes along Pines Boulevard and in local shopping centers size softeners by daily gallons and equipment. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for businesses after a site test and a usage review.
Conditioners and other options
Salt-free conditioners do not remove hardness minerals the way ion exchange does, so they are not a like-for-like price comparison. Read salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener. Living Water offers financing through its financing partners with a credit application; a co-applicant can apply with you.
