What the city's softening means for you
The report says the city's groundwater is softened, filtered and disinfected. Softening at the plant lowers the calcium and magnesium that cause scale, which is why a lot of Pembroke Pines households never see heavy buildup. The report does not list a hardness number for each address, though, so measuring at your faucet is the honest first step.
Signs that justify a test
- White crust on shower heads, faucet aerators or the inside of a kettle.
- A tankless water heater that needs descaling often.
- Dishes coming out of the dishwasher with a chalky film.
Thin spots on shower glass alone are often just evaporation; see hard water spots.
A quick home check: if a new kettle or coffee maker develops a crust within a few weeks, hardness is worth testing. If glass only shows faint rings that wipe off easily, evaporation is likely doing most of the work.
Who benefits most
| Situation | Why a softener can help |
|---|---|
| Tap test shows real hardness | Ion exchange stops new scale at fixtures and appliances |
| Private well | Well water skips city softening and is often harder |
| Restaurants, gyms, laundries, car washes, schools, offices | Constant hot water and equipment make even moderate hardness costly |
Pembroke Pines has plenty of busy commercial corridors along Pines Boulevard and near the malls. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for businesses, sized after a site test and a look at daily water use.
What a softener does not do
A softener does not remove chloramine. If the complaint is taste or smell, that is a job for carbon filtration. Some homes need both; most city-water homes in Pembroke Pines start with the filter. See softener vs. filter.
Sodium and softened water
Ion-exchange softeners trade hardness minerals for sodium, so softened water contains a bit more sodium than before. For reference, the city's 2025 report lists sodium at 16.4 parts per million in its treated water. If you follow a low-sodium diet, ask your doctor, and consider drinking from an RO tap, which removes most dissolved salts.
Before you buy
Ask how capacity was sized, whether regeneration is demand-based, how much salt and water it uses, and where the drain line goes. Jorge gives you an itemized quote after the free test. See softener cost drivers.
