Where the water starts
NMB Water supplies Sunny Isles Beach with groundwater from the Biscayne and Floridan aquifers, treated by lime softening, nanofiltration or reverse osmosis, blended and disinfected with chloramine. The water meets standards. A drinking water system is about taste, reducing the disinfectant, and certified reduction of anything specific you care about.
The options compared
| Option | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Under-sink alkaline RO | Dedicated faucet; carbon plus membrane; minerals added back for taste; condo-friendly | Cabinet space, drain fitting, scheduled filter changes |
| Pitcher | Cheap, no install | Small volume; many rated for chlorine, not chloramine |
| Fridge filter | Cold water and ice | Short contact time; check certified claims |
| Bottled or delivered water | No equipment | Carrying, storage, deliveries through building access |
| Whole-home system | Every tap and shower | Needs a main line you control; not a replacement for RO |
How to choose
- Taste is the goal: RO or a chloramine-rated carbon filter.
- A specific contaminant, such as lead, fluoride or PFOA/PFOS: a model certified for that claim under NSF/ANSI 53 or 58, verified in the certifier's listing.
- Condo: under-sink RO, following your association's rules for plumbing work.
- House: whole-home plus RO if the shower matters too.
Why alkaline RO
Reverse osmosis removes most minerals, which can make water taste flat. Living Water's alkaline RO systems add a remineralization stage after the membrane, mainly for taste. Compare in alkaline vs. standard RO.
Older buildings and lead questions
NMB Water's 2025 service line inventory found no lead service lines in its system. Plumbing inside a building and a unit is separate and varies with age and renovations. If that is a concern, choose a filter certified for lead reduction and confirm it in the certifier's listing, and use a certified lab if you want a reading from your own tap. NMB's report also suggests flushing pipes for several minutes before drinking or cooking when water has been sitting.
Part-time residents
If you are in Sunny Isles Beach for part of the year, choose a system you can live with when you are away. Ask how to idle and restart it, and plan filter changes around your stays. Any filter past its rated capacity stops meeting its claims, and a carbon cartridge left too long can shed fine particles, something NMB Water mentions when explaining black specks.
