Why RO in a building that already gets treated water
Part of NMB Water's supply already goes through reverse osmosis at the Norwood plant, and the rest is lime-softened or nanofiltered, according to its 2025 report. After blending, the water is disinfected with chloramine and travels from Miami Gardens to the barrier island, then through your building's pumps and risers to your unit. Under-sink RO treats it at the last step, where you fill your glass, your coffee maker and your pots.
The stages, in plain terms
- Sediment filter catches particles from mains and building piping.
- Carbon stages reduce chlorine and chloramine and protect the membrane.
- RO membrane separates out most dissolved solids.
- Tank or direct flow to a dedicated faucet.
- Remineralization in Living Water's alkaline units, for taste.

Condo installation checklist
- Association rules: many buildings require notice, an approved contractor or insurance certificates for any plumbing work. Check with management before scheduling.
- Cabinet space: tankless units save room in compact kitchens.
- Drain connection: RO needs a small drain fitting under the sink.
- Leak protection: ask about shutoff valves and leak detection, which matter more when there is a unit below yours.
- Fridge line: optional, with extra tubing.
Certification
RO drinking water systems are certified under NSF/ANSI 58. Each reduction claim, such as fluoride, lead or PFOA/PFOS, is listed separately for each model. Look up the exact model in the certifier's online listing before relying on any claim.
RO or whole-home in a condo?
In a tower, whole-home treatment of your unit is rarely possible because the main line is shared. RO covers the kitchen faucet; for the shower, a chloramine-rated shower filter is the realistic add-on, with frequent cartridge changes. If you own a house or townhome on the island, you have the full choice, and many owners pair whole-home filtration with RO in the kitchen.
Upkeep for seasonal owners
Pre-filters, carbon stages and the membrane are replaced on a schedule based on your water and use. If you are away for months at a time, ask how to handle the system while you are gone and what to do on return, such as flushing the first tank of water. Running costs are covered in RO operating costs.
