Equipment choices
- Tank or tankless: tankless frees up space in compact condo kitchens and usually needs an outlet. See tankless vs. tank RO.
- Stages, including remineralization on alkaline models.
- Production rate, for larger households or frequent entertaining.
- Certified claims under NSF/ANSI 58 on the exact model.
- Faucet style and finish to match the kitchen.
Condo factors that affect the job
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Building rules | Some associations require approved contractors, insurance certificates or set work hours |
| Countertop | Stone or quartz needs a proper hole for the RO faucet, or use an existing opening |
| Leak protection | A shutoff or leak detector matters when a neighbor lives below |
| Fridge or ice maker line | Extra tubing and fittings, sometimes behind built-in cabinetry |
| Elevator and parking access | Scheduling the visit with management |
Running costs
Pre-filters, carbon stages and the membrane are replaced on a schedule based on water quality and use. On NMB Water, the carbon stages protect the membrane from chloramine, so keeping them current protects the more expensive part. Part-time residents should ask how idle months affect the schedule. Ask for:
- The interval for each stage in writing.
- Whether service is included.
- How much water goes to drain per gallon produced.
See RO filter replacement cost.
Compared with delivered or bottled water
Carrying cases through a lobby and up an elevator, or storing jugs in a small kitchen, is part of the real cost of bottled water in a tower. Whether RO pays off depends on how many gallons your household uses for drinking and cooking. Run your numbers in the bottled water vs. RO calculator.
What a clear quote shows
The model and its certified claims, each stage and its replacement interval, installation details and exclusions such as countertop drilling, and warranty terms. If two quotes differ a lot, compare line by line; one may include a fridge connection or a service plan. See why quotes differ.
Rentals and second homes
If you rent your unit out seasonally, think about who changes the filters and when. An RO system that guests use but nobody services will drift past its rated capacity. Some owners set calendar reminders tied to their own visits; others arrange service. Either way, include the replacement schedule in the cost comparison, not just the installation.
