Water factors you can measure
- Chloramine: WASD's main system averaged 2.5 ppm in 2025. Hot water makes the smell more noticeable.
- Hardness: WASD softens at the plant, but what remains affects how soap and shampoo rinse.
- The yearly free chlorine weeks: some people notice a difference when WASD switches disinfectants for two weeks.
We make no medical claims. Rashes, eczema or persistent irritation are for a dermatologist.
Beach-town factors
Living a block from the ocean adds sun exposure, salt water and pool chlorine, and indoor air conditioning dries the air. All of these affect how skin feels regardless of tap water. Rinsing after a swim and moisturizing help either way. Testing separates the water's contribution from everything else.
Showers in older buildings can also run hotter than people expect when a central system is set high; cooler, shorter showers are a free experiment worth trying.
Keep a simple log
- Does it feel different during WASD's free chlorine weeks?
- Is it different at a hotel or another home?
- Does soap leave a film?
- Does it change after swimming days?
Two or three weeks of notes tell you more than any brochure.
Options for a Surfside house
A whole-home city water system reduces chloramine at every shower. Living Water describes its Puronics whole-home systems as removing chloramine and chlorine. If testing shows meaningful hardness, a softener can be added. Plumb sprinklers to bypass both.
If you do install whole-home filtration, give it a few weeks before judging, and keep notes the same way you did before. That way you can tell whether the change you feel is from the water or from the season.
Options for a condo unit
Whole-home treatment is usually not available in a unit. A shower filter whose listing includes chloramine reduction is the simplest step. Small cartridges wear out quickly in hot, high-flow showers, so follow the replacement interval. Pair it with under-sink RO for drinking water.
Remember that a condo shower filter only treats the shower it is on; guest baths need their own.
Shower filter shopping notes
- Look for chloramine reduction on the exact model's listing; chlorine alone is not the same.
- Hot water and high flow reduce contact time, limiting what a small cartridge can do.
- Replace cartridges on schedule.
- Vitamin C style filters are marketed for chloramine; check any claim against a listing.
In a house, a whole-home system avoids these limits because the media is far larger and sized to your flow.
