What arrives at your meter
Surfside buys treated water from Miami-Dade WASD and carries it through its own pipes, which start at a 24-inch main entering town. By the time it reaches your meter, the water has been softened at WASD's plants and disinfected with chloramine, 2.5 ppm for WASD's main system in 2025. A whole-home system works on that chloramine. It is about taste, odor and comfort, not about fixing water that fails standards.
Is your home a candidate?
- Single-family house with its own meter: yes, this is where whole-home treatment fits best.
- Duplex or small building you own: often, depending on how lines are split.
- Condo unit: no access to the main line; use point-of-use treatment.
- Condo association: building-level treatment is possible, but it is a board project sized to the building's flow and pumps.
Sizing for chloramine
Chloramine breaks down more slowly than free chlorine, so filter media needs enough contact time. That means sizing to your peak flow: how many bathrooms, how many people shower at once, whether an irrigation line is on the same side of the system. Living Water's city water systems use Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring equipment, which Living Water describes as removing chloramine and chlorine. See the city water system.
Installing a few blocks from the ocean
- Place equipment out of direct sun and salt spray, or in an enclosure.
- Keep it accessible for service; side yards in Surfside can be narrow.
- Install a bypass valve so the house keeps water during service.
- Plan a drain for systems that backwash.
- Decide whether irrigation should be teed off before the system, since sprinklers do not need filtered water.
That last point matters here: the Town's Public Works guide notes that the same water system supplies sprinkler irrigation. Filtering lawn water wastes media.
Use your meter data
Surfside offers Eye On Water, which lets account holders see water use and get leak alerts from their meter. Usage history is also handy for sizing a whole-home system, because it shows your actual daily and peak use rather than a guess.
Add drinking water at the sink
Whole-home filtration handles chloramine; under-sink alkaline RO lowers dissolved solids for drinking and cooking. Many houses do both. Financing is available through Living Water's financing partners with a credit application, and a co-applicant can apply with you.
