Scope comes first
The City of West Palm Beach treats lake water with lime softening, filtration and UV, then uses chloramine, switching to free chlorine for 21 days each summer. For most homes that points to one of these:
- Drinking water only: under-sink RO.
- Every tap: whole-home filtration for chloramine and chlorine.
- Both, in many single-family homes.
A softener is added only if a test supports it.
Condo, townhouse or house
| Home type | Typical scope | What changes the job |
|---|---|---|
| Condo | Under-sink RO | Countertop, cabinet space, building rules |
| Townhouse | RO, sometimes whole-home | Where the main enters, shared walls |
| Single-family | Whole-home plus RO | Main line access, irrigation split, drain and power |
Older homes
West Palm Beach has many older houses. Older plumbing can mean extra fittings, tighter access or a main line in an awkward spot. The city also notes that home plumbing materials are outside its control and publishes a service line inventory at wpb.org. None of that changes whether filtration fits, but it can change the installation work, and the quote should say so.
City or county water changes the plan
Some West Palm Beach addresses are served by Palm Beach County Water Utilities rather than the city. The county draws groundwater from the Biscayne and Floridan Aquifers and treats it at its own plants, so hardness and other readings can differ from city water. That can tilt a project toward or away from adding a softener. Jorge tests the water you actually have rather than assuming from your ZIP code, and the quote is built on those results.
Ownership costs to ask about
- Media and cartridge replacement schedules, and how chloramine levels and water use affect them.
- RO pre-filter and membrane life.
- Any service visits included.
- Salt, only if a softener is part of it.
Framework: annual cost of owning a whole-home filter.
What the quote should show
- Exact equipment model and size.
- Labor and plumbing changes.
- Bypass, fittings and pre-filters.
- Filter schedule.
- What is excluded.
