What PFAS are
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances have been used in non-stick, stain-resistant and water-resistant products and some firefighting foams. They break down very slowly and are found at low levels in many places. EPA's rules set limits for several PFAS in public water systems, with compliance dates in the coming years.
Where to find West Park's results
- Broward County's 2025 report: the "Other Tested Contaminants" table lists PFAS results for 1A, 3A and 3BC alongside a 2029 MCL column. West Park is 3BC.
- The unregulated contaminants table in the same report covers UCMR sampling for other districts.
- The county's PFAS section at broward.org/WaterServices has the full list of compounds tested.
- EPA's UCMR 5 Data Finder lists results by water system.
Choosing a PFAS filter
- NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) or NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis) certification that lists PFOA and PFOS reduction.
- The exact model number on the certifier's listing.
- Cartridge changes on schedule.
Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS. Check any model's listing, including anything Jorge shows you.
Under-sink RO systems and some carbon block filters carry PFOA and PFOS reduction claims, but only specific models. Always confirm on the certifier's own listing, by exact model number.
Reading the table
The county reports PFAS in micrograms per liter (ug/L). One ug/L equals 1,000 nanograms per liter (parts per trillion), so 0.004 ug/L is 4 ppt. The Hazard Index is a combined measure for a mixture of certain PFAS, with a limit of 1. If any of it is unclear, call the county at 954-831-3250 or ask Jorge to walk through it with you.
Testing
PFAS testing requires a certified lab using EPA methods. Jorge's free screening covers chloramine, hardness, TDS, pH and iron, not PFAS. See home screening vs. lab analysis.
Private wells
If any water on your property comes from a private well, no utility data covers it. A certified lab is the only way to know whether PFAS are present. See well water in West Park.
