WESTLAKE · FLUORIDE

Fluoride Water Filter in Westlake

Westlake's water no longer has fluoride added. Seminole Improvement District buys its water from Palm Beach County Water Utilities, and SID's 2025 report notes that PBCWUD discontinued fluoride as an additive before July 1, 2025, ahead of the statewide requirement. Any fluoride in the water now is what occurs naturally. If you want to reduce fluoride further, reverse osmosis is a common method; confirm the model is certified for it.

What the report shows

SID's report lists PBCWUD's supplier fluoride result at a highest level of 0.898 ppm, with a range of 0.738 to 0.898 ppm, from triennial sampling in May 2023, when fluoride was still being added. The maximum allowed is 4 ppm. The report notes the timing. Later sampling will reflect the water without the additive.

Fluoride is one of the supplier results SID reprints from PBCWUD. SID's own internal testing in the report covers lead and copper at Westlake taps, not fluoride, so the PBCWUD figure is the one that applies.

Natural fluoride

Groundwater can contain some natural fluoride. Westlake's water comes from surficial aquifer wells about 150 feet deep, treated at PBCWUD plants. Until new sampling is published, a lab test of your tap is the way to get a current number.

If you rely on a private well instead of SID water, nothing was ever added, and only a lab test of your well tells you its natural level. Ask the lab to include fluoride with your yearly bacteria and nitrate test.

How fluoride is reduced

  • Reverse osmosis: a common method for drinking water at the kitchen sink.
  • Activated alumina: used in some specialty filters.
  • Standard carbon: pitchers, fridge filters and whole-home carbon generally are not designed for fluoride.

For RO, look for NSF/ANSI 58 certification for fluoride reduction on the exact model. See under-sink RO in Westlake.

RO is typically installed at one sink for drinking and cooking water. Reducing fluoride at every tap is uncommon, because shower and cleaning water are not usually the concern. Keep filters and the membrane on schedule; performance depends on it.

A neutral note

We do not take a position on fluoride. This page lays out facts about your water and how filtration works. For dental or health questions, talk to your dentist or doctor.

The statewide change applies to community water systems across Florida, not only PBCWUD.

Remineralizing

RO removes most dissolved minerals along with fluoride. Living Water's alkaline RO adds a remineralization stage for taste. Compare alkaline vs. standard RO.

Some people prefer standard RO water as is. Either way, the membrane does the reducing; the alkaline stage only adds minerals back afterward.

Common questions

Is fluoride added to Westlake water?

No. PBCWUD stopped adding it before July 1, 2025.

Why does SID's report still show fluoride?

The figure is from 2023 sampling, when it was still being added.

Does a whole-home carbon filter remove fluoride?

Generally not. RO or activated alumina are the common methods.

What certification should I check?

Fluoride reduction on the exact model's listing, such as NSF/ANSI 58 for RO.

Is the in-home test free?

Yes.

Can I reduce fluoride for the whole house?

It is uncommon and involves larger equipment. Most households treat drinking water at one sink with RO.
