Where scale shows up in new homes
- Frameless glass shower doors and dark fixtures.
- Showerheads and aerators that slow down.
- Ice makers, coffee machines and dishwashers.
- Tankless water heaters, which are sensitive to scale.
- Cars and windows washed with a hose.
In a brand-new home it can take months for buildup to show, so a test now is the early warning.
Scale also costs efficiency: a scaled heating element or tankless heat exchanger works harder. Descale on the maker's schedule either way.
What we know about Westlake's water
SID's report lists sodium at 49.7 ppm and gives PBCWUD's supplier results, but no hardness figure. Spots come from hardness and from other dissolved solids, so a measured number matters more than appearance.
The report also shows PBCWUD uses several treatment processes across its plants, including lime softening and membrane processes, which is one more reason not to assume Westlake's water is either hard or soft. Your tap result is the number that matters.
Softener vs. conditioner
| Ion-exchange softener | Salt-free conditioner | |
|---|---|---|
| Removes hardness | Yes | No |
| Reduces spotting on glass | Generally yes | Less so |
| Protects heaters from scale | Yes | Can reduce buildup |
| Needs salt and drain | Yes | No |
More: salt-free conditioner vs. ion exchange.
For businesses, scale protection is usually the real reason to soften: dishwashers, ice machines, coffee equipment and laundry machines all suffer. Living Water installs softening plants for businesses after testing.
Spots that are not hardness
Spots on windows and walls only where sprinklers hit come from irrigation water, which may be reclaimed water or a well rather than your tap. Rust-colored spots point to iron; see orange stains in Westlake.
Cleaning existing scale
Treatment prevents new scale; it does not remove old buildup. Use a descaler suited to the surface and test stone and coated glass first. A squeegee on shower glass after each use cuts spotting whatever your water.
Because other dissolved solids also leave residue, some households use RO water for rinsing glassware, steam irons and humidifiers even after softening.
Book a hardness test
Living Water installs ion-exchange softeners for homes and softening plants for businesses, after testing. See water softeners in Westlake. Call, text or WhatsApp Jorge at (305) 793-5974.
If the test shows low hardness, Jorge will tell you, and a squeegee may be all you need.
