Why we test instead of guessing
PBCWUD runs several plants, and SID's report does not publish hardness. Without a number, no one can tell you whether a softener is worth it. A few minutes of testing at the kitchen tap gives you that number, and it is part of Jorge's free visit.
It is also worth knowing that softening at a treatment plant and softening at home are not the same thing. Plant processes are run for an entire service area. Your home equipment is sized only for your household. Whether the remaining hardness at your tap is enough to bother you is a household decision, made with a number in hand.
Signs worth mentioning
- White crust on showerheads, aerators and glass doors.
- Spots on dishes and glasses.
- Scale in kettles, coffee makers, ice makers and water heaters.
- A tankless heater throwing scale-related error codes.
In a new home, these signs can take a while to appear. If you are moving in now, the test is the earlier warning. See hard water spots in Westlake.
How an ion-exchange softener works
Resin beads trade sodium or potassium for calcium and magnesium. When the resin is loaded, the softener regenerates with brine from a salt tank and sends the rinse to a drain. A demand-based (metered) valve regenerates only when your actual use calls for it, which keeps salt and water use down.
Softener and chloramine
A softener does nothing for chloramine taste or odor; that is a carbon filtration job. If you want both, a whole-home filter usually goes first, then the softener. SID's report lists sodium at 49.7 ppm; a softener adds some sodium in exchange for hardness, and potassium chloride is an alternative regenerant.
Businesses in Westlake
Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for businesses: restaurants, hotels, schools, laundries, car washes, offices and gyms. Scale in dishwashers, ice machines, boilers and washers costs money. A test at the point of use and daily volume set the size.
Softening only the lines that need it, such as a kitchen, laundry or boiler feed, often keeps a commercial project smaller than softening the entire building.
Alternatives and booking
A salt-free conditioner reduces scale sticking without removing minerals and needs no salt or drain. Compare salt-free vs. ion exchange and softener vs. filter. Call, text or WhatsApp Jorge at (305) 793-5974.
