What sets the size
- Measured hardness: more hardness means more resin capacity or more frequent regeneration.
- Water use: people, bathrooms, appliances; for businesses, daily volume.
- Valve: demand-based regeneration is more efficient than a timer.
An undersized softener regenerates constantly; an oversized one costs more up front. Sizing from real numbers avoids both.
Iron, if present, affects resin and may need its own stage; the test shows whether it is a factor at your tap.
Installation in Westlake homes
Many newer homes bring the main line into the garage, where a softener and brine tank fit easily near a drain and outlet. Placement outdoors needs protection from sun and weather. A bypass for irrigation lines keeps you from softening water meant for the lawn. Ask your builder whether a water treatment loop was installed.
The brine tank needs space for salt to be added easily. Think about who will refill it and how far the bags will be carried.
Pairing with a chloramine filter
A softener does nothing for chloramine taste. If you want both, the quote will show two functions, usually a carbon filter first and the softener after. You can do both now or one at a time.
Many households start with one and add the other later; nothing about either prevents that.
Businesses
Restaurants, hotels, schools, laundries, car washes, offices and gyms can protect dishwashers, ice machines, boilers and washers with an ion-exchange softening plant. Living Water installs them after testing. Softening only the lines that need it keeps costs sensible.
Some businesses run two smaller units so one can regenerate while the other stays in service; others size one larger unit. The test and the daily schedule decide.
For a business, the quote should name each line being softened and the daily volume it was sized for, so you can see exactly what you are paying to protect.
Ownership costs
- Salt, based on hardness and use.
- Occasional service and resin care.
- Retesting to confirm settings.
SID's report lists sodium at 49.7 ppm; softening adds a little more, and potassium chloride is an alternative. See water softener cost in Florida.
Ask for the expected regeneration frequency based on your test. That number drives salt use more than anything else.
