Weston's disinfectant, from the report
The 2025 "What's on Tap?" report says treatment includes a membrane softening process followed by disinfection, and that "chlorine and ammonia are added for disinfection, within regulated limits." The disinfectant table lists chloramines with a highest running annual average of 3.2 ppm, individual results from 1.0 to 4, and a maximum residual level of 4. Bonaventure, served by the City of Sunrise directly, also receives chloramine-disinfected water according to Sunrise's service area reports.
Why plain carbon may struggle
- Chemistry: chloramine is chlorine bound to ammonia, which makes it slower to react with ordinary carbon.
- Contact time: it needs longer contact with the media, so small, fast-flowing cartridges let more through.
- Capacity: at around 3 ppm, small filters can be used up faster than their label suggests.
What to look for
- Catalytic carbon or media specifically designed for chloramine.
- A chloramine reduction claim on the exact model's NSF/ANSI 42 listing. Chlorine taste and odor claims alone do not cover chloramine.
- Sizing to your peak flow, so water has enough contact time even when several fixtures run.
Living Water describes its Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring whole-home systems as removing chloramine and chlorine.
Free chlorine weeks
The City of Sunrise, whose customers include Weston, periodically switches from monochloramine to free chlorine as routine distribution maintenance; its notice describes this as typically once or twice a year over two to four weeks. The 2026 event ran from April 27 through May 25. During those weeks the water can taste or smell more like a pool. A filter designed for chloramine also handles free chlorine. Aquarium owners should ask their pet supply store about dechlorination during these periods. Event dates are posted on Sunrise's water quality pages, or call 954-888-6000.
Whole-home or kitchen only
A whole-home system covers every shower and faucet. If your concern is only drinking water, an under-sink RO with chloramine-rated carbon stages may be enough. Read more in the chloramine filter guide.
