The timeline
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| May 29, 2025 | Miami-Dade WASD stopped adding fluoride after the Board of County Commissioners directed it to (Resolution R-370-25). |
| June 9, 2025 | NMB Water stopped adding fluoride during treatment. |
| July 1, 2025 | Chapter 2025-22, Laws of Florida (SB 700), took effect, prohibiting additives in public water systems that do not meet the law's definition of a "water quality additive." |
Before that, NMB's January 2022 newsletter described its water as fluoridated at the Norwood plant before distribution.
What is still in the water
Both utilities say trace amounts of fluoride remain because it occurs naturally in groundwater. NMB's water comes from the Biscayne and Floridan aquifers, and some of it already passes through reverse osmosis at the plant before blending. To see the level, check the fluoride line in NMB's annual Water Quality Report; because the change happened mid-2025, read the testing dates and footnotes carefully. For a number from your own tap, use a certified lab.
Which home filters reduce fluoride
- Reverse osmosis is a common method. Look for an NSF/ANSI 58 listing with a fluoride reduction claim on the exact model.
- Activated alumina is a specialty media designed for fluoride; performance depends on pH and contact time.
- Standard carbon (most pitchers, fridge filters and whole-home carbon) is generally not designed for fluoride. It is aimed at chlorine, chloramine, taste and odor.
The condo-friendly option
Most people who want less fluoride care about the water they drink and cook with. In an Aventura condo, that points to an under-sink system rather than anything on the building's main line. Living Water's alkaline RO units are multi-stage reverse osmosis systems with a remineralization stage that adds minerals back for taste. Ask Jorge for the certification documents on the exact model so you can confirm which reduction claims it carries. See under-sink RO in Aventura.
If you are on a well
Private wells are uncommon in Aventura, but where one supplies drinking water, its fluoride level depends entirely on the aquifer and is not affected by the utilities' 2025 decisions. A certified lab test shows the actual level, and treatment, if wanted, is configured from that result.
Our position
We do not take a side on fluoride and health. Some people want less of it; others are content with the natural level or prefer to keep getting fluoride from toothpaste or their dentist. Dental questions belong with your dentist. Our job is to explain what a given piece of equipment is certified to do.
