AVENTURA · PFAS

PFAS Water Filter in Aventura

PFAS are synthetic "forever chemicals" that utilities nationwide are now monitoring under new federal limits. NMB Water, which serves most of Aventura, publishes its PFAS results in its annual Water Quality Report and says its reverse osmosis and nanofiltration treatment reduces PFAS. If you want a home filter for PFAS, rely only on a model certified under NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 for PFOA and PFOS reduction, and confirm the exact model in the certifier's listing.

PFAS in one paragraph

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are a family of thousands of man-made chemicals valued for resisting heat, grease and water. They have been used in non-stick coatings, stain-resistant fabrics, food packaging and some firefighting foams. They break down very slowly, which is why they turn up in water supplies around the country. According to NMB Water's 2025 report, EPA set final limits for PFOA and PFOS of 4 parts per trillion each in 2024, with a compliance deadline of 2031.

What NMB Water reports

  • Additional Contaminants Monitoring table: the 2025 report lists results for PFOS, PFOA, PFNA, PFHxS and a PFAS hazard index, as contaminants for which standards were recently set and initial compliance monitoring is underway.
  • Voluntary monitoring: NMB says it voluntarily monitored 29 PFAS in 2025.
  • UCMR: under EPA's Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule, NMB tested for lithium and PFAS analytes in 2025, and the report says all results were below minimum reporting levels.
  • Treatment: NMB states that the Norwood plant's reverse osmosis and nanofiltration reduce PFAS, and that it plans to retire lime softening by the EPA deadline.

Read the table yourself rather than relying on summaries; the units, ranges and footnotes matter. NMB's Water Quality Manager can be reached at 305-948-2960. If your building is on Miami-Dade WASD, its Water Quality Report has its own PFAS table.

Choosing a certified filter

TypeCertification to look forFits
Under-sink reverse osmosisNSF/ANSI 58 with a PFOA/PFOS reduction claimCondo or house kitchen
Under-sink or countertop carbon blockNSF/ANSI 53 with a PFOA/PFOS reduction claimKitchen

In every case, check the exact model in the certifier's online listing and replace cartridges on schedule; a filter past its rated capacity no longer meets its claim.

Where Living Water stands

Living Water does not claim that its systems remove PFAS. If PFAS reduction is your goal, the claim you need is a specific certified PFOA/PFOS listing on the model you buy, and Jorge will point you toward checking exactly that. His free visit can still help: he explains your utility report, tests what the in-home screening covers, and talks through drinking-water options for your kitchen.

Testing for PFAS

PFAS cannot be measured with an in-home screening kit. It takes a specialized certified laboratory and careful sampling. For most Aventura households on NMB Water, the utility's published monitoring is the practical starting point; a private lab test is an option if you want a reading from your own tap.

Common questions

Does Aventura's water contain PFAS?

NMB Water publishes PFAS monitoring results in its annual Water Quality Report. Check the PFAS table in the latest report for the actual numbers.

Does NMB Water treat for PFAS?

NMB says its reverse osmosis and nanofiltration processes at the Norwood plant reduce PFAS.

Do Living Water systems remove PFAS?

Living Water does not make that claim. Look for NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 certification for PFOA and PFOS on the exact model.

Can Jorge test for PFAS at home?

No. PFAS testing requires a specialized certified laboratory.

What does 'below minimum reporting level' mean?

It means the lab did not detect the substance above the lowest level the method can reliably report.
