What the Town's report says
The 2025 report describes System V treatment as reverse osmosis, aeration and disinfection with sodium hypochlorite, a chlorine compound. Its results table lists the disinfectant residual measured through the year as chloramines, which form when chlorine is combined with ammonia. The residual stays in the water all the way to your tap, which is exactly what it is designed to do.
Disinfection by-products were low in the 2025 table: total trihalomethanes at 0.44 ppb and haloacetic acids at 0.98 ppb, against limits of 80 and 60.
Why plain carbon can struggle
Chloramine breaks down more slowly than free chlorine. A small carbon pitcher or a basic whole-house carbon tank may reduce chlorine well and still let chloramine taste come through, especially at high flow in the shower. Systems for chloramine typically use catalytic carbon and enough contact time for the flow your home uses.
Living Water describes its Puronics whole-home systems for city water as removing chlorine and chloramine. See the chloramine filter guide.
Certification to look for
- NSF/ANSI 42 covers aesthetic effects such as chlorine and chloramine reduction. Look for chloramine specifically on the listing.
- Check the listing for the exact model, not just the brand.
- Match the rated flow to your home's peak use.
Other utilities in Davie
The Town's utility map shows Sunrise, Cooper City, Hollywood, Broward County, Ferncrest Utilities and Fort Lauderdale water (through a bulk agreement) serving parts of Davie. Each publishes its own Water Quality Report with its disinfectant and levels. Jorge measures the residual at your tap, so the filter matches what you actually have.
Signs chloramine is what you are noticing
- A pool-like smell when the shower first runs hot.
- Tap water that tastes better after sitting in an open pitcher in the fridge, although chloramine fades much more slowly than chlorine.
- Aquarium owners in Davie needing a dechlorinator rated for chloramine, not just chlorine.
A test confirms the level so you are not guessing.
Whole home or just the kitchen?
- Whole-home filtration treats chloramine at every tap, including showers.
- Under-sink RO treats only drinking and cooking water.
Many Davie homes use both.
