What PFAS are
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, are synthetic chemicals that resist heat, grease, water and stains. The Town's report lists common uses: non-stick cookware, water-repellent clothing, stain-resistant fabrics and carpets, cosmetics, firefighting foams, electroplating, and grease-resistant products. They break down very slowly, which is why they are studied so closely.
What the Town of Davie reported
Under the EPA's fifth Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 5), utilities sample for 29 PFAS and lithium so the EPA can learn how often they occur in drinking water. The Town of Davie's 2025 report lists its March 2025 results for all 29 PFAS and lithium as ND, meaning not detected by the laboratory analysis.
If another utility serves your Davie address, such as Sunrise, Cooper City, Hollywood, Broward County, Ferncrest Utilities or Fort Lauderdale through the bulk agreement, look in that utility's own Water Quality Report for its UCMR 5 results. Private well owners have no utility data at all; a certified laboratory can test a well for PFAS.
How to judge a PFAS filter
- Look for certification under NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) or NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis) that specifically lists PFOA and PFOS reduction.
- Check the listing for the exact model number, not only the brand or product family.
- Follow the filter change schedule; a certified filter only performs as listed while its cartridges are within their rated capacity.
Living Water does not claim that its systems remove PFAS. If PFAS reduction is your goal, ask to see the specific model's certification before buying anything, from anyone.
What Jorge can and cannot do
The free in-home test covers taste, odor and scale factors: chloramine, hardness, dissolved solids, pH, and iron or sulfur signs. It does not measure PFAS, which requires a certified lab. Jorge can explain your utility's published results and the difference between a home screening and a lab analysis; see home screening vs. lab analysis.
Other reasons Davie families filter
Most Davie homeowners who call are bothered by something they can taste or see: chloramine, spots on glass, or rust stains from irrigation wells. Those are what the free test is built for.
