Start with the hardness reading
WASD's 2025 report describes lime treatment at the Hialeah plant and enhanced softening at the John E. Preston plant, the two plants that generally serve homes north of SW 8 Street. Softened county water may leave you with little reason for a home softener. A hardness test at your tap is the cheapest way to avoid buying one you do not need.
What sizes a softener
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| Hardness at your tap | Higher hardness means more resin or more frequent regeneration |
| People in the home, or daily use for a business | Determines capacity |
| Peak flow | Affects valve and tank size |
| Chloramine treatment | A carbon stage is added if you also want chloramine removed |
Installation factors
- A drain nearby for regeneration water.
- An outlet for the control valve.
- A protected spot for the tanks, especially for exterior installations.
- Separating the irrigation line so you do not soften lawn water.
- Association rules in townhome communities.
Ongoing costs
- Salt: how much depends on hardness and water use.
- Water for regeneration: efficient valves use less.
- Service: ask what routine checks are recommended.
For businesses such as restaurants and laundries in Hialeah Gardens, ask how the softener's capacity matches peak use. See water softener cost in Florida.
When a softener pays off
A softener is most worth it where scale costs money: a business with commercial dishwashers, ice machines or washers, or a home where the tap test shows enough hardness to crust fixtures and shorten the life of a water heater. If your test shows low hardness, the money is often better spent on chloramine filtration or a drinking water system. Jorge will tell you which side of that line your home falls on.
Softener or conditioner?
Salt-free conditioners work differently and do not remove hardness the same way. Read salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener before deciding. Living Water offers ion-exchange softening plants.
