HIALEAH GARDENS · SOFTENER VS. FILTER

Water Softener vs. Water Filter in Hialeah Gardens

A water filter and a water softener do different jobs. A filter, usually carbon, reduces chloramine, chlorine taste and odor; a softener removes the calcium and magnesium that cause scale. Hialeah Gardens buys Miami-Dade water that is lime-softened at county plants and disinfected with chloramine, so many homes here need a filter more than a softener. A test at your tap shows which, or whether you need both.

What Hialeah Gardens' water points to

The city's water comes from Miami-Dade's plants, generally the Hialeah and John E. Preston plants for homes north of SW 8 Street. WASD's 2025 report describes lime treatment and enhanced softening at those plants, and lists chloramine at 2.5 ppm in the main system. The city's own report mentions an occasional light yellow tint from natural organic material. All three of those, chloramine, taste and tint, are filter jobs.

When you need both

  • The test shows hardness high enough to scale fixtures, and you also dislike the chloramine.
  • A business needs scale protection for equipment and better-tasting water for customers.
  • You want softer-feeling water in the shower and no disinfectant smell.

In those cases, Living Water's city water system can combine stages.

Symptoms and the usual answer

A word on water from your sprinklers

Some Hialeah Gardens yards are watered from a shallow well rather than the city line. If stains or smells appear outdoors, neither a softener nor a carbon filter on the house will help, because that water never passes through them. Irrigation water is its own question; see orange stains and well water treatment.

Do not buy on guesswork

A softener sold to a home that does not need one costs money in salt and water for years. A filter that is not rated for chloramine may not solve the smell. Jorge's free test measures chloramine and hardness at your tap so you buy the right one. The general softener vs. filter comparison goes deeper.

Common questions

Which do Hialeah Gardens homes usually need?

Many need a filter for chloramine more than a softener, since the county softens the water. Your tap test decides.

Does a softener remove chloramine?

No. Chloramine needs a carbon stage designed for it.

Does a filter stop spots on glass?

Generally not. Spots from hardness need softening.

Can I get both in one system?

Yes. Living Water's systems can combine filtration and softening when the test shows both are worthwhile.

What does each cost?

It depends on what your water needs. Jorge gives you an itemized quote after the free test.
