Why spots still happen on softened water
WASD's 2025 report describes lime treatment at the Hialeah plant and enhanced softening at the John E. Preston plant, the two that generally serve homes north of SW 8 Street. Softening reduces hardness but does not remove it all, and any water that dries on glass leaves its dissolved minerals behind. In a Florida bathroom with a glass shower enclosure, even moderate hardness can show.
Spot, scale or something else?
| What you see | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| White, chalky spots on glass | Hardness minerals after evaporation |
| Crust on aerators and showerheads | Scale buildup |
| Orange or brown stains | Iron, often from irrigation or well water; see iron stains |
| Cloudy film on dishes | Hardness, detergent or dishwasher settings |
Softener or conditioner
- Ion-exchange softener: removes calcium and magnesium. Living Water offers ion-exchange softening plants.
- Salt-free conditioner: changes how minerals behave rather than removing them, so spots on glass may still form when water evaporates.
Read salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener.
Cheap fixes before equipment
- Squeegee shower glass after each use.
- Use rinse aid in the dishwasher.
- Soak aerators and showerheads in vinegar to remove scale.
- Flush the water heater on the manufacturer's schedule.
If spots keep coming back fast, the hardness test tells you whether a softener is the answer.
Where Hialeah Gardens homes see it most
Glass shower enclosures, black or chrome fixtures and dark car paint show spots first, because the minerals stand out against them. Washing cars in the driveway with a hose leaves spots if the water dries in the sun; rinse in the shade or dry with a towel. Pool owners may see a scale line at the waterline, which is a pool chemistry question as much as a tap water one.
Businesses
Restaurants, cafes and laundries in Hialeah Gardens notice scale first in dishwashers, coffee machines, ice makers and water heaters. A commercial softener is sized from the hardness test and daily water use. See water softeners in Hialeah Gardens.
