JUNO BEACH · SULFUR SMELL

Water Smells Like Rotten Eggs in Juno Beach

In a Juno Beach home on utility water, a rotten-egg smell on hot taps almost always comes from the water heater, where the anode rod can react with the water and form hydrogen sulfide gas. A sulfur smell outdoors or from a private well points to groundwater. The utility water from Jupiter or Seacoast is membrane-treated and chloraminated, so it is rarely the starting point. A hot-and-cold check sorts it out.

Where the smell comes from

What you noticeLikely source

Sprinklers, wet walls outsideIrrigation water from a well
Hot and cold, all taps, on a wellHydrogen sulfide in groundwater

The water heater explanation

Tank heaters use a sacrificial anode rod, often magnesium. In warm, still water, bacteria can react with it and give off hydrogen sulfide. Chloramine in the incoming water does not prevent this in a tank that sits. Flushing, changing the rod type or adjusting temperature are the usual fixes, done by a plumber following the heater maker's guidance.

If your building has a shared water heater or a central hot water loop, the fix belongs to the association, but the diagnosis is the same.

Why utility water is rarely the cause

Both suppliers draw some water from the deep Floridan Aquifer and treat it with reverse osmosis, and both disinfect with chloramine before it enters the mains. Jupiter treats its shallow aquifer water with nanofiltration and Seacoast does the same at Hood Road. If a whole neighborhood noticed a smell, the utility would be the place to call: Jupiter at 561-741-2735 or Seacoast at 561-627-2920.

Wells in and around Juno Beach

Groundwater in northern Palm Beach County can carry hydrogen sulfide. Jupiter's work plan notes that the nearby Jupiter Farms community self-supplies drinking water from private wells. If your property uses a well for irrigation or anything else, a sulfur smell around sprinklers is common and separate from your tap. Wells used for drinking need treatment chosen from the well's test. Compare aeration vs. filtration for sulfur smells.

Seasonal homes

If your Juno Beach home sits empty part of the year, water in the heater stagnates and the smell can be strong on return. Run hot water through every fixture before judging it.

What Jorge checks

Hot and cold taps, chloramine, pH and iron, plus the heater's age and use. If the heater is the cause, he will tell you, and you may not need a filter at all. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974.

Common questions

Is the smell coming from Juno Beach's water supply?

If it is on hot taps only, it almost always forms in the water heater.

Will a whole-home filter fix a water heater smell?

Usually not by itself. The gas forms in the heater, after the filter.

Why do my sprinklers smell like sulfur?

Irrigation from a well can carry hydrogen sulfide. It is separate from your drinking water.

Can a well with sulfur be treated?

Yes, with a system chosen from the well's test, often oxidation or aeration plus filtration.

Does the test cost anything?

No. The in-home test is free.

Why is the smell worse after vacation?

Water sitting in the heater gives the reaction time to build. Run the hot water for a few minutes.
