House, condo or well
| Home | Usual scope |
|---|---|
| Single-family on USD water | Whole-home chloramine filter, optional kitchen RO |
| Condo or apartment | Under-sink RO; whole-home only if your line is accessible |
| Private well | Multi-stage system from the well's test |
| Irrigation well | Iron filtration on the irrigation line |
The USD's service area, as the district describes it, runs from Silver Beach Road south to 45th Street and from the Turnpike east to the Atlantic. Homes outside it may be on a different utility or a well, which changes the scope.
Price drivers on city water
- Bathrooms and peak flow, which set media volume for chloramine contact time.
- Disinfectant level; the 2025 report lists a highest annual average of 2.87 ppm.
- Main line access, location and distance to a drain.
- Older plumbing that may need a plumber's attention first.
Two homes on the same street can get different quotes for honest reasons. A four-bedroom home with three bathrooms and a pool needs more media than a two-bedroom bungalow. A main line on an exterior wall is quicker to tie into than one that comes up through a slab in the middle of the house. A quote should say which of these drove the number.
Costs to ask about
- Media or cartridge replacement schedule.
- Power and drain needs.
- Service visits.
- What changes if the new treatment plant changes the water.
See annual cost of owning a whole-home filter.
Also ask what is not included: removing an old system, patching drywall, or electrical work for a valve that needs power. Those are fair costs, but they should be on paper before installation day.
The new plant and your purchase
The USD plans to fully replace its plant, with construction projected from spring 2026 to fall 2029. A good quote should explain how the equipment would adapt if future reports show different water, and whether media can be changed rather than the whole system.
What a fair quote shows
- Your test results.
- Model and capacity.
- Installation scope.
- Maintenance schedule.
