Three common scopes
| Scope | What it does | Relative size of the job |
|---|---|---|
| Under-sink RO | Drinking and cooking water at one faucet | Smallest |
| Whole-home city water system | Chloramine reduction at every tap | Medium |
| Well water system | Iron, sulfur, hardness and more, as tested | Largest |
Price drivers on county water
- Home size and peak flow: more bathrooms need more media for enough chloramine contact time.
- Disinfectant load: PBCWUD's eastern area averaged up to 3.04 ppm in 2025; media capacity is sized against that.
- Plumbing access: how easy it is to reach the main line, add a bypass and find a spot that fits HOA rules.
- Add-ons such as a kitchen RO.
Two neighbors on the same county water can still get different quotes. One may have a garage with easy access to the main line; the other may have a long run under a slab, a guest suite or HOA rules that push the equipment to a harder spot. The water is the same; the work is not. That is why Jorge prices after seeing the house.
Price drivers on a well
- Test results for iron, hydrogen sulfide, hardness and pH.
- Number of stages, and whether pump or pressure tank work is needed.
- Lab testing for bacteria and nitrate, which Florida DOH recommends yearly.
See well water system cost in Florida.
What the quote should show
- Model, media type and what it is rated for.
- Installation work and materials.
- Maintenance schedule and what each service includes.
- Warranty terms.
- The test results it is based on.
More in why installation quotes differ.
Costs after installation
Ask how often media and cartridges are replaced and whether the system uses water to backwash. PBCWUD's own tip list includes replacing filter cartridges according to the manufacturer, which applies to every filter in the house, from the fridge to a whole-home tank. See annual cost of owning a whole-home filter.
Finally, ask whether the installer will come back to retest after installation. A quick test after the system is running shows that it is doing what the quote promised.
