Comfort, not medicine
We talk about how water feels, not health outcomes. Filtered or softened water changes how a shower feels for many people, but it is not a treatment for eczema, psoriasis or any skin condition. A dermatologist is the right person for those.
It also helps to notice patterns: is the feeling worse in winter, after swimming, or with a new product? Those clues point away from or toward the water.
Chloramine and flush weeks
SID's water comes from PBCWUD, which disinfects with chloramine. During periodic flushes, such as July 5 to 25, 2026, SID notes a slight chlorine increase with a smell similar to a pool. If showers feel or smell different for a few weeks, check whether a flush is underway.
The rest of the year, the disinfectant is chloramine, which has a flatter smell and lingers longer than free chlorine. Some people notice it most in a hot, enclosed shower, where steam carries the odor.
Hardness
Hard water makes soap harder to rinse and can leave residue on skin and hair. SID does not publish hardness, so a test at your tap tells you whether it is a factor. See hard water spots in Westlake.
New homes with frameless glass and dark fixtures show hardness residue quickly, which can be an early clue before the test.
What the test looks at
- Chloramine at the shower or nearest tap.
- Hardness, pH and TDS.
- Hot water: water heater condition can change smell and feel.
Jorge also asks what you have already tried, such as different soaps or a shower filter. Knowing that helps separate what water treatment can realistically change from what it cannot.
Whole-home and shower options
- Whole-home: a city water system built for chloramine treats every shower, bath and sink.
- Softener: only if hardness justifies it.
- Shower filters: compact, but small cartridges have limited contact time for chloramine. Check certifications.
See whole-home filtration in Westlake.
A whole-home system also covers bath water for children, hand washing and laundry, which a shower filter does not reach.
Simple habits help too
Shorter, cooler showers, a gentle cleanser and moisturizing afterward help whatever the water. Then test, so you are not guessing. Call, text or WhatsApp Jorge at (305) 793-5974.
