PFAS in brief
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances have been used in non-stick, stain-resistant and water-resistant products, food packaging and some firefighting foams. They break down very slowly. EPA's drinking water rules set limits for PFOA, PFOS and several others, with compliance dates in the coming years.
Finding Pembroke Park's numbers
- Open Broward County's 2025 Water Quality Report.
- Find the table titled "Other Tested Contaminants."
- Read the 3BC column: PFOA, PFOS, PFBS, PFNA, PFHxS and the Hazard Index.
- Compare with the "2029 MCL" column.
The county's PFAS section at broward.org/WaterServices lists every compound tested. EPA's UCMR 5 Data Finder is another source. If Hallandale Beach serves your address, use its report.
Remember that the 2029 column is a future compliance limit. Utilities are planning now for those dates, and the county's report presents current results next to them so customers can see where things stand.
Units
The county reports in micrograms per liter (ug/L). Multiply by 1,000 to get nanograms per liter, the same as parts per trillion. The Hazard Index combines several PFAS into one number, with a limit of 1.
Choosing a filter
- NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) or NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis) certification listing PFOA and PFOS reduction.
- The exact model number on the certifier's listing.
- Cartridges changed within rated capacity.
Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS. Verify any model's listing, including anything Jorge shows you.
Reverse osmosis units and some carbon block filters carry PFOA and PFOS claims, but only specific models. The certification is per model, not per brand or type.
Testing
PFAS testing requires a certified lab using EPA methods. Jorge's free in-home screening covers chloramine, hardness, TDS, pH and iron, not PFAS. See home screening vs. lab analysis.
Private wells
No utility data covers a private well. If any water on your property comes from one, a certified lab is the only way to know about PFAS. See well water in Pembroke Park.
